THE PRACTICAL DRIVING TEST
Just like when you made the decision to start your lessons, booking your practical driving test can be a very exciting but nervous time, so you must be properly prepared. Taking your test too early could result in failing the test and delay you getting on the road.
So, are you ready?
A good indication that you are ready to take your practical driving test is when:
You are not receiving prompts from your driving instructor
You are not making silly mistakes
You can pass a mock test
Your driving instructor agrees you are ready
If you don't feel you are ready, talk to your instructor about your concerns. You can postpone your test for free if done within 3 working days of your appointment by contacting the DVSA on 0300 200 11 22 or emailing their driving test booking support team at customerservices@dvsa.gov.uk.
Postponing your test will give you more time to practise areas of weakness and take more mock tests and could get you on the road sooner!

The first part of your test is an eyesight check. You are expected to be able to read a number plate (with or without glasses) from a distance of 20 metres.
You will be asked two random questions from the 'Show me, Tell me' questions. Failing to answers these questions correctly is not enough to fail outright, however you will get a 'driver fault' for your lack of knowledge.
The practical test lasts approximately 35-40 minutes, which includes 10-20 minutes of independent driving (following directional road signs or a sat nav), plus one manoeuvre and possibly an emergency stop.
The examiner will give you the result at the end of your test and provide feedback regarding your drive and any mistakes.
If you pass, your examiner will hand you a 'Practical Driving Test Pass Certificate' and you are able to drive immediately, however your driving instructor will drive you home.
